La citation a été donnée par Uri Avnery dans son texte « Wagner au mémorial » de mai 2005, mais il s’agit de la transformation d’une blague en citation imaginaire : Le 17 avril 1899, Theodor Herzl écrivait (version anglaise) : « The following joke is making the rounds in Vienna now. The German Kaiser is supposed to have said to me: ‘Zionism is a splendid idea; the only thing is, it can't be carried out with Jews. ‘ »
