Quotation from Lucien Rebatet “And then... I love military success” — Dec. 10 1969

A collaborator during the nazi Occupation of France (1940-1944), he authored a virulently anti-Semitic book in 1942, *Les décombres*. He was sentenced to death after the Liberation but later pardoned. He remained a racist but became an admirer of Zionist militarism.

"

I’ve since come to understand that the Jewish question isn’t about race. Race refers to Black people, White people, and Asian people. Jews are White, just like us. It’s an ethnic group, not a race.  I can tell you straight up, it’s not at all that I’m hostile toward Arabs (I have Muslim friends, I have enormous respect for the Muslim religion, which has its greatness; this civilization seems to me to have many very [admirable] traits), But I won’t hide from you that I sided with Israel during the Six-Day War, which seemed perfectly normal to me, because between David and Goliath, well, naturally you side with David—even if that means facing 100 million adversaries. And then... I love success; I love military success. We’ve suffered so many defeats; it gives me pleasure to see a victorious general with a certain genius, like General Moshe Dayan.
